Tools I Find Useful: Windows Update Blocker
A while back I pointed out how to prevent Windows 10 from updating itself. While that method does work, I’ve found a simpler one: Windows Update Blocker. Continue reading TIFU: Windows Update Blocker

Adventures In Computing: Christmas Present
I used MusicBee mixers last Christmas as a present. Without naming names, I know someone that really likes Christmas music by Bing Crosby. But they also like Christmas songs from other sources. Continue reading AIC: Christmas Present
Tools I Find Useful: MusicBee
Over the years I have amassed a decent sized collection of audio files. Mostly music, but there is the occasional speech or similar in the mix. Organizing this collection has become a larger problem as it has grown. Was easy enough when it was just the 5 music CD’s I have. Remember back when music was a physical object? How times have changed. Continue reading TIFU: MusicBee
Tools I Find Useful: Auslogics Duplicate File Finder
I’ve got an every changing pile of files on my computer. Add some, for various reasons. Remove some, usually because their reason is now past. From what I can tell, most people do the same, even as the details vary between people.
Over time, this adding and removing of files will lead to duplicates. Downloaded twice, without realizing it. Accidentally held down control while dragging. Copied some images for a project, then forgot to delete them. Whatever the reason, unless care is taken, duplicates will slip into the pile of files. Continue reading TIFU: Duplicate File Finder
Tools I Find Useful: Remove Empty Directories
Ever find an empty folder and wonder why it’s there? Realized you made a folder, but never got around to using it? Between backup tools, duplicate finders, and a habit of deleting files (not folders), I run into this sort of thing on a regular enough basis. No idea how common it is for everyone else, although I suspect it’s moderately rare. Continue reading TIFU: RED
Recovering Dead Drives
Computer drives being what they are, it is inevitable that yours will fail. The question is what you do when that happens. Much of the answer to that depends on how much of a ‘crisis’ that failure is. A good backup strategy mitigates the issue, but even then you might have data you want recovered. Absent paying expensive professionals there are steps that can be taken. Continue reading Recovering Dead Drives
Tools I Find Useful: Scanner
First up, I have to say the name is terrible. While it is an accurate enough description of the program, as it scans your computer, ‘Scanner‘ itself is too broad of a term and searching for it will find a ton of other things before this program. ‘Scanner pie chart‘ on the other hand, will find it right away. Continue reading TIFU: Scanner
Almost A Review: Find Similar Audio Files
Over the years, I’ve built up a collection of music files on my computer. I suspect most people have, to some degree. And while I have tried to keep things organized, with no duplication, I know there are doubles in my collection. Continue reading AAR: Similarity
