Commentary From Elsewhere: Smart Hostility
Recently I ran into an article about a hiccup with a particular Smart TV. Long story short, it broke Windows on the computer that shared the network. Continue reading CFE: Smart Hostility

Commentary From Elsewhere: Federal Emergency Alert System
Recently there was a test of the Federal Emergency Alert System. You may have noticed this, as the test covered multiple delivery methods. I heard about it in the news, but I did not encounter the actual test message. Continue reading CFE: Federal Emergency Alert System
Commentary From Elsewhere: AI is not a problem
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, I’m sure you’ve heard some of the worries around Artificial Intelligence (AI). Seems like I read another article every few days. And a surprising number of people are talking about it, in the ‘real world’. People that I normally wouldn’t expect to even consider the topic. Even had a few ask me if I was worried about it (hence this post).
AI is not a topic for concern. Continue reading CFE: AI is not a problem
Commentary From Elsewhere: In Defense of Desktop Icons
I recently read an article which argues against desktop icon. It does make a number of good points. Continue reading CFE: In Defense of Desktop Icons
Commentary From Elsewhere: P65 Warning
A while back I bought a smartphone, but not talking about that. The focus here is the P65 warning that was on the package. Continue reading CFE: P65 Warning
Commentary From Elsewhere: The End of Location Tracking?
As you may know, much of what you do with computers is tracked. And as a smartphone is a computer, this applies there too. In particular, as the phone is a mobile device, talking to relatively stationary devices, it knows where it is. At least in a general sense.
Why am I mentioning this? Because some of those tracking your location through your phone have announced they won’t be. Now I think this is a good thing, the less data kept on our daily actions the less data that can inevitably leak or otherwise be used against us. But the ‘why’ for this change in approaches is interesting. Continue reading CFE: The End of Location Tracking?
So apparently there are people out there that will, instead of sleep, scroll through depressing ‘news’ on their phones. To such an extent, this practice has a name: doomscroll
I was a bit shocked and amazed when I heard of this. In retrospect, shouldn’t have been, but I was. It’s a fallen world, such stupidity should be expected. Continue reading CFE: Doomscrolling
Commentary From Elsewhere: In Defense of 8 Chan (aka 8ch.net)
If someone used a chemistry book to build a bomb (and kill people), do we outlaw libraries (as they can hold chemistry books)? Continue reading CFE: In Defense of 8ch
uBlock, again…
At a recent meeting I observed, a website was mistyped, which brought up a scam about the computer being infected (it wasn’t, it was fine). As typos are a thing, I’m sure this sort of thing happens all the time. So what do you do to prevent the scary scams? Continue reading uBlock, again…
Commentary From Elsewhere: Disappearing Agendas
As some may have noticed, I regularly attend the Town of Mendon Board meetings. And as with most (all?) governmental groups, they produce an agenda for their meetings. Again, as is common, that agenda is posted on their website. The Village and School do the same (as do many other groups, but those are local ones). All this is good and I approve. Continue reading CFE: Disappearing Agendas
