Pointless Computer Tricks: Phone for Haircut

The other day I decided my hair had gotten long enough that it was time for a haircut. So I got myself together, went outside, was all but ready, when I realized… I had forgotten my phone.

Without some context that likely doesn’t mean much, apart from maybe implying I’m getting old and forgetful.

For a number of years I have been cutting my own hair. Original motivation was a way to save a little money. While that has become less significant over time, I still cut my own hair.

When it’s long enough I go outside and shave it all off. Then repeat a few months later. Between already having the tools and having done it enough times, it’s actually pretty easy. That the hair style I am aiming for is so simple helps. I wouldn’t want to try any other hair style, but ‘shave it all off’ is something I can do.

But it is complicated by my inability to see the hair that I am cutting off. I found, much to Mom’s displeasure the first time I did it, that I don’t catch all the hair by touch. So I’ve tried other ways to get it all. Juggled mirrors for a bit. Went inside to use the mirror, then back out to get the missed spots.

Which brings us back to the phone…

Now I take pictures of my head when I think I’m done. Check them, and trim those spots that I inevitably miss. Selfies that are actually useful, imagine that.

Really, this is just another example of using the camera and screen that so many of us are always carrying with us. After all, a phone can be an eye at the end of a stick (or arm). Not being bound by the same limitations your head is, it can be placed elsewhere for a variety of reasons. Far from the only one, and I doubt I’m even the first to do this.

And yes, this is a ‘Pointless Computer Trick’ because, at this point, a phone is just another kind of computer…
