Comments Disabled

Bottom line first
Commenting has been effectively disabled, for this site and OFAL.

Background
I’ve been running this site for a bit over 4 years. In that time I have yet to have any ‘real’ people sign up. Every once in a while an obvious junk user will sign up. No big deal, easy enough to remove them after some time has passed (just in case they were a ‘real’ person and wanted to comment). But the rate of junk sign ups has been steadily increasing.

In practice, the only legitimate reason to sign up is to leave a comment. Other sites may have other benefits, but not this one. All content is viewable to all (minus admin features, of course). So how many comments have been left, over the past 4 years? Zero.

Combining those two facts (zero comments, increasing junk users) led to a simple solution: disable user sign up. Which has the side effect of also disabling comments.

The Future
I am aware of methods to mitigate junk users. But considering the number of ‘real’ users and comments in the past, against the effort to implement, it’s not worth it at this time.

I may review this decision at some point in the future, but for now that’s how it stands. Review is more likely if you (a real person) tell me (face to face) you wanted to leave a comment. But considering the lack of past comments, that is unlikely to happen. And if I hadn’t felt it polite to inform you, odds are this change would have gone completely unnoticed. At least by ‘real’ people. Junk users would have noticed, but they also don’t count 🙂
