uBlock, again…
At a recent meeting I observed, a website was mistyped, which brought up a scam about the computer being infected (it wasn’t, it was fine). As typos are a thing, I’m sure this sort of thing happens all the time. So what do you do to prevent the scary scams?
As pointed out before, uBlock Origin is the simplest/quickest tool I am aware of to stop this sort of thing. While there are many other tools that do the job, some of which are even more powerful, I have yet to see one that is as simple to use. It’s just about ‘install and forget’ simple. And when it’s not, it’s an easy on/off toggle.
So if you don’t already have something blocking junk on the internet, get uBlock Origin. If you already have something, uBlock Origin might still make for a good addition.
In many ways, it’s like driving a car. You didn’t build it, might only have the vaguest idea how it works, and take it to mechanics for anything serious. But when you sit down in the driver’s seat, you’re responsible for what happens next.
Unfortunately, I don’t think it will help in the situation that brought this to mind. When talking to people after the meeting, the view was that the network perimeter was secured, thus there was no need to do anything on a local machine.
Eh, I did what I could, I can’t force action here. You can lead a horse to water…
